Alder Cones are the catkin or seed bloom of the Black Alder Tree or Alnus Glutinosa. They look like tiny pine cones. They are considered a botanical due to their high content of natural tannins and humins. Shrimp will automatically consider the cones as their own and make them part of their ‘homestead’.
Description
The Black Alder tree itself is indigenous to Europe and has been successfully introduced in the US and Canada. In the aquarium, they perform health enhancement similar to Almond Leaves. They fight harmful bacteria and disease with the release of tannins and humins as they begin to decompose. Additionally, they offer an excellent surface for biofilm to grow which is a very tasty and nutritious addition to the shrimp diet.
